An e-bike rider's guide to Queensland's best trails
Our home trail is the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail — but Queensland has ten trails worth loading up an e-bike for. Distances, surfaces and what to expect on each, plus everything we've learned about touring them properly.
BVRT quick facts
Plan the ride with the essentials first
- Route: 161km between Wulkuraka and Yarraman on a former railway corridor.
- Surface: mostly gravel and unsealed trail; conditions can change quickly after rain and storms.
- Our trail hire: Premium electric mountain bikes are $59 a day for 1–6 days or $150 a week.
- Collection: 5/8 Lambert Road, Indooroopilly, about one minute from Indooroopilly Station.
- Before leaving: check the Queensland Government’s latest trail conditions and official trail map.
Prepared by the Brisbane Bike Rental workshop team from customer trip feedback and local hire experience. Official route and condition information is maintained by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.

One of Queensland's great rides
Rolling countryside, historic rail bridges and small towns full of character — the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail rewards whoever covers the most ground with the least effort. That's where an e-bike changes the trip: tackle the climbs, extend the distance, and still have legs left for the next town.
We're a locally-owned Brisbane e-bike shop with a genuine love of the outdoors, and we've tailored a hire plan specifically for BVRT riders — well-maintained e-bikes, friendly local advice, and everything you need included from the start.
Premium EMTB
What you get on our Premium EMTB (electric mountain bike)
For the longer, rougher trails on this list — the BVRT's northern end, the Boyne Burnett, the Tablelands — we hire out a proper trail-spec e-mountain bike, not a repurposed commuter. $150 a week, or $59 a day for a 1–6 day trip.
- Ergonomic riding position — a sprung seat post and handlebars with ergonomic grips for genuine comfort over a long day, not just a short spin.
- Healthy riding posture — the bike is set up to keep you comfortable and controlled, mile after mile.
- Rugged aluminium build — a high top tube and powerful frame built to handle washouts, loose gravel and everything a rail trail throws at it.

10 Queensland trails worth riding on an e-bike
From an easy 4.8km riverside warm-up to a 161km multi-day epic — ordered roughly by scale, not by how good they are. Distances and surfaces are for the trail as it stands today; several are still being extended.
1
Brisbane Valley Rail Trail
Wulkuraka to Yarraman
Queensland's longest rail trail, and our home turf — rolling countryside, historic rail bridges and small towns all the way from Ipswich to the Brisbane Valley's northern edge. Ride it in one big push or break it into stages.
2
Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail
North Burnett, via Gayndah & Mundubbera
A genuine outback rail-trail adventure through the Burnett River valley and the tunnel-riddled Dawes Range. Remote and still growing — eventually set to become Australia's longest rail trail at over 300km.
3
Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail
South Burnett, via Goomeri & Murgon
The 44km Murgon-to-Kingaroy stretch is Queensland's longest sealed rail-trail section — a smooth, easy multi-day e-bike tour through South Burnett farming country and heritage towns.
4
Noosa Trail Network & North Shore
Noosa hinterland & Great Sandy National Park
Around 100km of hinterland fire trails and gravel roads, plus a completely different ride on the North Shore — ferry across and pedal the beach itself. Bush and coast in the one trip.
5
Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway
Bells Creek to Coolum
A flat, fully sealed path linking Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Coolum along nine connected beachside sections — easy e-bike riding with a swim stop whenever you like.
6
Gold Coast Oceanway
Coolangatta to The Spit
Beachfront the whole way, from the quiet southern sands at Tugun and Bilinga through Burleigh, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise to The Spit. Flat, scenic and easy to ride in either direction.
7
Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail
Far North Queensland, Atherton to Rocky Creek
A cooler-climate ride through tropical tableland country, with the region's famous waterfall circuit close by. A good one to combine with a Far North Queensland trip rather than a Brisbane day ride.
8
Moreton Bay Cycleway
Scarborough to Redcliffe
A flat bayside path past Scarborough, Margate and the Redcliffe jetty — an easy afternoon or sunset ride with water views the whole way, well inside range of a single charge.
9
Mary Valley Rail Trail
Imbil to Brooloo, Sunshine Coast hinterland
Short, easy and family-friendly, with a couple of water crossings for character. A good warm-up ride if you're heading through the Sunshine Coast hinterland, or pair it with a Noosa trip.
10
Bicentennial Bikeway
Toowong to Brisbane CBD
Right on our doorstep — a flat riverside path from Toowong into the city, with connections on to South Bank, Kangaroo Point and New Farm. The easiest way to test-ride your hire before a bigger day out.
Good to know
Planning your BVRT ride
161km, your pace
Ride the full trail over several days or pick a shorter stretch — the choice of e-bike and hire length is entirely yours.
Pick up in Indooroopilly
Collect your e-bike from our workshop, 1 minute from Indooroopilly Station, before heading out to the trailhead.
Support if you need it
Every hire includes free wear-and-tear labour for the whole hire; parts cost extra. Call, text or WhatsApp the shop if anything comes up on the trail. This is shop support, not a guaranteed roadside rescue service.
Licence & rules: every e-bike rider must be 16+ and bring a valid driver licence; learner, interstate and overseas licences count. A passport does not replace the rider licence. On the trail and on the roads and paths to and from it, follow Queensland’s rules: helmet on, pedal-assist to 25km/h, and 12km/h on footpaths and when passing pedestrians. Official rules.
E-bike travel tips
Touring any of these trails on an e-bike
Plan around range, not just distance
A hilly, loaded multi-day trail uses more battery than a flat coastal path. Arrange charging stops with your accommodation or venue before setting off: ask whether e-bike batteries are permitted and where you may charge. A power point or bike rack does not mean permission to charge.
Use the supplied compatible charger and follow the bike instructions. Let the battery cool first; charge while awake and present in a permitted, ventilated area on a non-combustible surface, away from living areas, soft furnishings and exits. Disconnect when fully charged. Read the Queensland Fire Department charging guidance.
Check conditions before a remote ride
Rail trails through the Burnett and Dawes Range are exposed and can wash out or turn sandy after rain. Queensland sun is serious business too — carry more water than you think you'll need, and start early on hot days.
Book accommodation ahead on multi-day trails
Small trail towns like Toogoolawah, Gayndah and Goomeri have limited beds. If you're riding the BVRT, Boyne Burnett or Kilkivan-Kingaroy over more than a day, lock in where you're sleeping before you set off.
Share the trail properly
Rail trails and coastal paths are shared with walkers, families and (on several trails) horse riders. Slow down and give a wide berth when passing, and use a bell rather than relying on your speed to get past.
Carry the basics we already pack for you
Puncture kit, phone holder and a trail map come with every hire — but on the more remote trails, add a printed map or offline maps download as well. Mobile coverage drops out for long stretches of the Burnett trails.
Get the right bike for the surface
Sealed coastal paths (Gold Coast Oceanway, Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway) suit any of our hire e-bikes. Gravel and sandy rail trails ride far better on the Premium EMTB above — ask us if you're not sure which trail needs which.
